It may seem like common sense not to scroll social media or answer text messages while driving, but did you know that most people who would say they do not engage in distracted driving actually do? Distracted driving takes thousands of lives each year, and these behaviors range from texting and driving to things like applying mascara, looking at your map, eating and drinking, adjusting the radio, or even visiting with a passenger to the extent that you are not paying attention to the road. Most drivers would not classify their behaviors or habits on the roads as distracted driving, but it is important to know that distracted driving is more than texting and driving! Did you know that looking at your phone takes your eyes off the road for an average of five seconds and that this causes you to drift out of your lane roughly 10 percent of time? Nearly 30 percent of car accidents are caused by texting and driving, and this does not account for other distracted behaviors! Collision King wants to keep you safe on the roadways this year. Here are some things you can do to stop engaging in distracted driving:
- Put your phone away. There is no need to check social media, respond to text messages, or change the radio while you are driving. If you would like to listen to music, decide what you will listen to before you start driving and keep it at a lower volume.
- Use safe driving apps. Many phones even have a “do not disturb while driving” settings that will let people know that you are driving and cannot respond to texts at the moment, and they can call you if it is urgent.
- Ask passengers for help! If you need directions or a song change, let your passengers know. They can do this for you. If you are driving alone, pull off the road safely and handle these situations.
- If you are the passenger, speak up! You can help your driver by offering to read them messages, helping with the temperature or radio controls, and pulling up directions. There is no need for a driver to engage in unsafe driving habits when there are passengers who can take care of things like maps, music, and air for them.
